Why do people vote for only ONE representative?

Electoral votes are used instead of popular vote because we are the 'united states' Technically not really a country as much as a unit of dynamic states sharing the same banner. a lot of states would never want to give up what little power they have, that is why the electors vote the same, because it gives a state more pull, or attention even. If you have a state with 50 electoral votes, would candidates go to your state if you voted 30-20 against them, or 50-0 against them, chances are they wouldn't really care so much unless it was all or nothing. Now don't get me wrong, i don't think that's fair or anything, its just how it works now, it gives the state more representation than the people. You can argue that it benefitspeople more if their state is better represented, but in a lot of states that are not 'swing states' most peoples votes are compromised before they are even cast, they will always lose and their vote counts for nothing..
