Why Do People Think God Punishes Us With Natural Disasters?

Earhtquakes, tsunamis, eruptions, landslides, etc. have been happening for the billions of years this planet has been here. Humans migrating to these areas don't stop the Earth from doing what it's always done. I don't see god's hand in these events at all.
